What good books are there ?

Below is a list of material that I have read over time.
All are great books, some are well worth reading more than once.

Title:Trackers
Author:Peter Haran
Publisher:New Holland - 2000
Link:Website
Comments:Trackers is a gritty and moving story that reveals the Australian Army’s
little known use of combat tracker dogs during the Vietnam War.
A war veteran tells his story with vivid and compelling immediacy, blending the terror
of hunting and encountering the elusive Viet Cong with the tender relationship between
a naive young Australian soldier and his larrikin labrador-kelpie cross, Caesar..

Title:Flashback
Author:Peter Haran & Robert Kearney
Publisher:New Holland - 2003
Link:Website
Comments:Follows 7 Australians to Vietnam and back,1 doesnt return home.
It is written as they take a camping trip into the Australian hills many years
after their time in Vietnam with "Flashbacks"to time in south east asia.
A good read with a different style to most in this field, good Aussie humour features.
Covers their return to Australia and how each has delt with the after affects of war.

Title:Shockwave
Author:Peter Haran
Publisher:New Holland - 2004
Link:Website
Comments:The Vietnam War in the 1960’s and 1970’s was characterised by
the mobility provided by Iroquois UH-1H helicopters.
They were used as commuter taxis to carry troops in and out of operations areas,
to back up troops with supplies and ammunition, and to evacuate the wounded and ill.
This is the graphic story of the pilots and crews of Australia’s fleet of Iroquois helicopters during that time, the Dustoffs and the Bushrangers, their triumphs and losses.

Title:Crossfire
Author:Peter Haran & Robert Kearney
Publisher:New Holland - 2001
Link:Website
Comments:In October 1966, 28 soldiers were chosen to form Australia’s
first specialist Reconnaissance Platoon in the Vietnam War.
One of this platoon’s section commanders was a 20-year old regular soldier called
Bob Kearney, who led a series of deadly patrols, operating in isolation and
extreme danger ahead of the main Australian forces.
This is the story of Bob and his unit a tale of courage, terror, and survival,
told by fellow Vietnam veteran Peter Haran.

Title:Australia's Battlefields In Viet Nam - A Traveller's Guide

Title:The Men Who Persevered
Author:Bruce Davies & Gary McKay
Publisher:Allen & Unwin - 2005
Link:Website
Comments:The first Australians committed to serve in Viet Nam were a group of military instructors known as the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam.
Their initial role:to assist in the training of the ground forces of South Viet Nam.
But battalion battles and artillery duels, the relief of besieged camps, and mobile
strike forces became part of the mosaic that saw this curiously named unit forge
a distinct chapter in Australia's military history.

Title:Jungle Tracks
Author:Gary McKay
Publisher:Allen & Unwin
Link:Website
Comments:Jungle Tracks tells the stories of the men who went to war in South Viet Nam
in the armoured personnel carriers and tanks of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps,
and of those of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical engineers and Royal Australian Engineer mini-teams who supported them. It is very readable and is
brought to life through a collection of comments from veterans on events that
typify the operations in which those men were involved.The authors have provided good general information that will enable any reader to readily understand the armoured fighting vehicles, weapons and military organisations used. Consequently,I have no hesitation in recommending the book to non-military readers,military professionals or veterans&ldots;

Title:Vietnam Shots
Author:Gary McKay and Elizabeth Stewart
Publisher:Allen & Unwin
Link:Website
Comments:Photographic coverage of Australia's involvement in the Viet Nam war,on the battlefield and on the home front, backed up by explanatory text and captions.

Title:In Good Company: One Man's War In Vietnam
Author:Gary McKay
Publisher:Allen & Unwin
Link:Website
Comments:This is a grass roots account of what infantry soldiering is all about and
includes all of the highs and lows that men in combat will experience at some time.
A straightforward story of the fears and the camaraderie which soldiers experience in combat.
Anyone who wants to understand what service in South Viet Nam meant to
those who were there, should read this book.

Title:Delta Four: Australian Riflemen in Viet Nam
Author:Gary McKay
Publisher:Allen & Unwin
Link:Website
Comments:Delta Four exposes the inner workings of a rifle company – how its soldiers trained for war, and how they operated and fought in the war zone. It examines the basic qualities of infantry soldiering, of leadership and battlecraft. Above all else, it gives the soldier’s viewpoints of those aspects of war-fighting not found in training pamphlets.

Title:Sleeping With Your Ears Open
On Patrol With The Australian SAS
Author:Gary McKay
Publisher:Allen & Unwin
Link:Website
Comments:The reader will be with the SAS soldiers on patrol where on occasions they were unable to move even six metres for fear of being caught. The nerve-wracking drama of living on the edge is conveyed through the experiences of the men who often thought that ‘this patrol might well be their last’. The five-man patrols were always outnumbered but never defeated: this book shows why these elite soldiers were able to survive.
