Dan
Sinh Market
Uncle
Ho's City - Old Saigon
This
market is also known as the War Surplus Market.
Below
are just a few of the "Zippos" available at the market.
They
can be imported straight from the factory to you for your Ebay victims.
Most
cost about $2 wholesale as you see them here, retail is about $5.
Still
want to pay $360 for that Zippo on Ebay ?
This
has to be the worst "Zippo" job Ive seen !
Still
for sale on Ebay though as genuine.
Whats
a Fake ?
Ive
gotten some emails from people that have asked me to explain.
"
Whats the differance between a Fake and a Repro, arent they the same
thing " ?
They
are the same, its how they are marked and sold that makes a Repro a Fake.
A
Reproduced item will be marked by the maker as such or at least marked
in
a way that those looking at it will know its not wartime made.
A
Fake is a reproduction that hasnt been marked as a Reproduction
and
then is sold with the hints and wordings that it is wartime made.
This
goes for WW2 items as much as the Vietnam gear sold.
I
sell Reproduced items for Reenacting ,but all mine are marked as such,
so
they can never be passed off as a genuine wartime article.
So
it all comes down to the seller / maker doing the right thing.
When
theres big money to be made this wont happen often.
Who
sells Reproductions as Genuine Wartime ?
Just
because they sell these items doesnt make them bad sellers.
Most
have top feedbacks and you get what you pay for.
But
when you sell 800+ Patches as genuine, wartime made......
Read
between their lines and save yourself the cash................
If
you sell items that are reproduced and say so.....great.
Just
dont say or hint they are genuine when they were made in asia last week.
This
is only a few,but shows that there is a huge market out there to
sell to.

What
else do they Fake ?
Other
items I have seen that are obviously faked to make a profit
on
the growing interest in Vietnam and items from that period.
Death
Cards - Maps of popular areas fought in - Special Forces Patchs.
Special
Forces Equipment, this is usually regular issue sold as SF Gear.
Green
Berets - Kit bags - Floatation Bladders - Victory Flags - Repro Photos
Field
Dressings - Valour Medals - Montagnard Knifes and Dress
Enamel
Plaques for Special Units - Ransom Cards - VC Grenade Pouchs
US
Webbing restamped with 60's dates - VC / NVA sandles & boots
Dog
Tags from the period - VC Combat Police Uniforms - VC Naval Uniforms
Challenge
Coins - Unit Rings - Dressing up regular Uniforms with medals.
You
can tell a Fake cant you ?
In
most cases NO,it has gotten so hard to tell repros from genuine these
days,if
you are buying them over the internet and cant actually handle them,
then
it is very hard to tell real 60's made from yesterday made.
Some
of these items are made in the same shop,on the same machine as
they
were during the war,no one can tell the genuine item from the .99
cent one.
Most
veteran collectors will take note when buying something for their collection,
who
its coming from, were they say they got it, how does it look and feel.
Then
if they even suspect its not right in the smallest way, they will
pass on buying.
Buy
it for interests sake, but dont pay $600 for a $2 item.
If
some one says :
"
Veterans wartime bring back "
"
Deceased estate auction find "
"
My veteran dads / uncles / grandpa's "
"
Charity shop find "
then
be carefull, these are the trade marks of story tellers.
Sure
there are finds out there that are genuine, but their getting harder
to get.
REMEMBER
- BUY THE ITEM , NOT THE STORY !
Just
for fun, have a look at easygreens
helmets on Ebay, they are WW2 mostly,
but
they are the best "recreated" helmets out there, they are
almost perfect.
In
20 years, these helmets will resurface and be sold as genuine WW2 items
for
many thosands of dollars, its going to happen and will fool most people......
